Synapse Productions is a non-profit theatre company dedicated
to presenting provocative theatre that makes people think and gets
people talking. Synapse creates work that challenges
and inspires our audiences to see the world in different ways.
The stories we bring to life reflect our commitment to sharing
our vision of what theatre can accomplish with diverse audiences
in New York City and around the world. We believe that the theatre,
with its inherent immediacy and community, can be a prime forum
for spiritual and intellectual inquiry, and can provide a
vital framework for us to address the most pressing issues of our
time.
In all our work, we strive to bridge gaps and make connections.
By sparking our audience's imagination, we hope to be a catalyst
for positive change.
Since the company's inception at the 1996 Edinburgh Fringe Festival,
Synapse has presented productions of plays that ask difficult and
timely questions, including:
Another key element of Synapse's production history has been the
creation of quality theatre for family audiences. Synapse's
production of Grimm Tales
played at the inaugural New York Fringe Festival in 1997. The production
enjoyed a second run at Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Arts Center's
350-seat Mainstage in 1998. Synapse returned to Henry Street Settlement
in 2002 to present the World Premiere of our adaptation of Brer
Rabbit, a production which worked to de-stigmatize the classic
American folktales and celebrate our national heritage.
