Electronic Link
- Kessa De Santis -
Based upon the true lives of circa 1000 A.D.
royalty, Ymma of Normandy and Lord Silence, forced to wed by the
disturbed English king, this seemingly painfully dated tale is magnificently
realized as a modern comic romp. Featuring a wealth of effective
attributes that come together to form a successful whole, this SILENCE
is more than the sum of its creative parts.
The design team has set the framework for Ginevra
Bull's perceptive direction and the ensemble cast's exuberant performances.
Matthew Maher is hilarious with understated humor as the very odd,
very belligerent King Ethelred. Chan Casey, playing a priest named
Roger, is funny too, in a wholly antithetical sort of way. In the
midst of this spectrum we have the perky Agnes (Jessica Chandlee
Smith), the moody Eadric (Jens Martin Krummel) and the spirited
Silence (Abigail Savage). Completing the talented cast is Jessica
Claire, who was so good in the company's 2001 production of MACHINAL,
playing the angry, rebellious and enticing Ymma.
More of the plot of Ms. Buffini's SILENCE need
not be revealed here. Be assured that in the hands of Synapse, this
wonderful comedy reaches full potential. See it.
