Somewhere in the developing world lies Tambia, a part-Christian, part-Muslim country where prices are sky-rocketing, AK-47s are in demand, water is scarce, but the only thing people care about is getting their first cell phone.

Now a new Imam is stirring up trouble and the local gangs are getting restless as two western aid workers attempt to do good in this dusty land where "the borders don't make sense, there's no rule of law, you never know when the electricity's on, the last war's ruined everything, and the next war will ruin everything else."

THE GOD BOTHERERS gleefully skewers our preconceptions about religion, globalization, the oppression of women, and the underlying causes of poverty in the developing world.

Playwright Richard Bean's work has been seen in London at the National Theatre and at the Royal Court.  Synapse's production of THE GOD BOTHERERS marks his American debut.

Muslim conviction that suggests
neither side has a monopoly on wisdom."

hilariously serious."

"One of those rarities,
a really funny comedy with depth...
Never loses its wicked sense of humour...
Definitely a show to see."

Special-Event Reading

In 1969, peace-loving optimism and the right to protest were put on trial when counter-culture icons Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, Tom Hayden and others were tried by the federal  government for conspiring to incite riot in the streets of Chicago during the Democratic National Convention of 1968. Known as the "Chicago Seven," their prosecution was part inquisition, part three-ring circus, and revealed the threats posed by a justice system tainted by politics.

On Monday, October 25th, Synapse put the highlights of that astonishing and historic trial on stage at The Culture Project, when we performed a one-night only special event reading of Ron Sossi and Frank Condon's THE CHICAGO CONSPIRACY TRIAL.

Directed by David Travis, our reading of this funny and provocative adaptation of the original court transcripts was brought to life by a cast of more than 20 outstanding actors, including Broadway veterans Jonathan Hogan and Bill Buell.

An audience TalkBack followed the event, led by Brooklyn Law School Professor Susan Herman, who was joined on stage by special guest Leonard Weinglass (pictured above) original defense attorney for the Chicago Seven.

THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is an hilarious one-woman show that tells a story of revitalization and gentrification in Brooklyn as seen through the eyes of ten very different residents. An insider's look at a community in flux, this extraordinary comedy explores how a once Italian working-class neighborhood went from "crack to baguettes" in less than a decade.

Synapse presents the Off-Off Broadway debut of this original New York tale created by Mari Brown and Deanna Pacelli. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz declared December 13, 2003 as "There Goes the Neighborhood Day."
