As you may know, part of the Synapse mission is to produce socially
provocative theatre. As our country becomes increasingly embroiled
in global and domestic controversy, from the urgency of recent developments
in the Middle East and the threat of terrorism on our doorstep,
to the crisis of confidence in our business and community leaders,
we feel a responsibility as theatre artists to respond.
Great plays don't only capture their own era, but serve as
prophecies for future generations.
This season's plays force us to confront our own situation. The
Phoenician Women is a suspenseful, spectacular thriller that
condemns the destructive forces of nationalism in all its forms.
The Good Person of Setzuan examines the corrupting influences
of self-interest and greed. These plays attracted us with their
direct energy, their simplicity, and their candor - but most importantly,
with their relevance. In today's world, we are confronted with images
of war, grief, crime, and excessive wealth every day… Theatre provides
not just a reflection of troubled times, and not only a community
and forum within which we address our questions. Most importantly,
theatre can empower us with ideas - tools with which to promote
and create change. At Synapse, the theatre we produce strives to
meet that challenge.
