Our world seems to change more rapidly by the day, and it
is becoming more and more challenging for art to comment on and
reflect the evolving face of our culture. At Synapse, we believe
that theatre not only provides a community and forum within which
we address our questions; it also can empower us with ideas - tools
with which to promote and create change. The theatre we create strives
to meet that challenge.
With this in mind, we have postponed our plans to produce Brecht's
The Good Person of Setzuan, a parable of corporate greed.
Instead, we are now beginning work on one of our most ambitious
and timely projects to date, a formidable double-bill: the New York
Premiere of a musical stage adaptation of George Orwell's ANIMAL
FARM, and the American Premiere of a brand new multi-media stage
adaptation of the same author's 1984, to play in repertory
next season at SoHo's Ohio Theatre.
While many contemporaries considered Orwell a false prophet, his
1984 and ANIMAL FARM have in fact come to serve
as prophecies for future generations. Today, in our deeply anxious
world, the seeds of unthinking conformity are everywhere in evidence,
and it is easy to feel that our civil liberties are being curtailed
in the name of democracy.
Inside this newsletter, you'll find lots of info, announcements
and updates on ongoing Synapse events in 2003, including our Annual
Spring Benefit in May, our New Sunday Brunch Reading Series, and
other exciting happenings.
Enjoy!
