John Merrick: Do you know what happens when dreams cannot
get out?
Mrs. Kendal: Why, no. John Merrick: I don't either. Something
must.
Bernard Pomerance, from The Elephant Man
Something exciting did happen in October. The first show
of Synapse's inaugural 2000-2001 season ran for 20 performances
at the beautiful Connelly Theater on East Fourth Street. Listed
as one of "New York Theater's Best Events" on the New York Times'
website, newyorktoday.com, The Elephant Man featured some
of the finest acting and design to be seen onstage anywhere in the
city.
"A triumph!" - Show Business
"Compelling, admirable, and deeply moving" - Backstage
In March, Synapse moves to SoHo's Ohio Theater to bring 1920's
New York City to life in Sophie Treadwell's sensational classic,
Machinal: The Life Machine.
In the coming years, these pages will cast light on the stories
we tell and on the artists that bring them to vibrant life in our
productions, stories that bridge gaps and create connections, and
bring us closer to one another. We're setting out on quite a journey,
and we're glad you're with us for the beginning of the ride and
we hope you'll stay with us for the ride!
Welcome to the first edition of the Synapse newsletter.
