In
his classic novel, Orwell describes a Totalitarian society in which
the government - known as "the Party" - has almost complete control
over the people. The supreme ruler is Big Brother. Posters announce
"Big Brother is Watching You". Citizens are under 24-hour surveillance;
inside every home is a Telescreen that cannot be turned off, droning
endlessly with brainwashing propaganda while simultaneously transmitting
sounds and pictures back to the dreaded Thought Police. Insidious
Police Patrol helicopters dart among the rooftops, allowing police
to snoop in people's windows.
1984 is about one man's personal battle
to maintain his integrity and his individuality in the face of overwhelming
odds.
