WHAT'S ON> The Orwell Project>
1984> Notes
Originally created by Alan Lyddiard, the adaptation
comes to Synapse following a highly regarded 2002-03 UK run, which
the Scotsman called "mind blowing, a state-of-the-art experiment
in combining film, video and live theatre," and the London Times
hailed as "inspired." Using two-story high video screens and all-new
video footage shot specifically for this production, Synapse Artistic
Director Ginevra Bull (Machinal in 2001 and Silence
in 2002) creates an extraordinary and explosive theatre experience
as the Thought Police crush the spirit of all who undermine the
will of Big Brother.
Today, especially with passage of the Orwellian
"USA PATRIOT Act," government agencies and private companies
are increasingly empowered to violate the privacy of people everywhere.
Powerful mechanisms are being created for monitoring our lives,
and collecting, storing and processing enormous amounts of personal
data in the pursuit of more efficient marketing and in the name
of domestic security.
This production investigates our ostensible present-day
complacency in the face of the ever-increasing power of governments,
corporations and technology over our lives. Orwell's novel was originally
written as a warning against one possible future; this adaptation
places that future in our present, and asks whether or not it is
too late to turn back.
