WHAT'S ON> The Orwell Project
Today's America is not entirely dissimilar
from the dystopian worlds Orwell portrayed. The inexorable consolidation
of industry and capital has given rise to media conglomerates that
have the power and will to sculpt our values, shape our thoughts
and decide our nation's social and political agenda.
The growth of global terrorism has led to an ever-expanding
state security apparatus with no less an Orwellian moniker than
the Department of Homeland Security. The USA PATRIOT Act has enhanced
the Federal government's ability to protect and defend against real
and perceived threats; but with that new security has come a slow
and silent erosion of individual freedoms.
In this time of war and national insecurity and
instability, as the language of our political and social discourse
narrows, we are reminded of the warnings made by George Orwell against
the control of thought, speech and action that serves only to limit
freedom, choice and individuality.
